  1. Không dùng the trước một số danh từ chỉ nơi chốn như: hospital, church, mosque, prison, jail, court, school, college, university khi đề cập đến khái niệm chung hoặc mục đích sử dụng chính của những nơi này.

Ex:

  • The injured were taken to hospital. [= as patients] (Những người bị thương được đưa tới bệnh viện)
  • The guilty men were sent to prison. [= as criminals] (Những kẻ phạm tội đã bị bỏ tù.)
  • Mrs. Kelly goes to church every Sunday. [= as a Christian] (Chủ Nhật nào bà Kelly cũng đi lễ.)
  • School is over at half past three. [= school activities] (Trường tan lúc 3 giờ rưỡi.)

Dùng the khi những nơi này được đề cập như một nơi chốn cụ thể.
Ex:

  • Jane has gone to the hospital to visit Tom. [= as a visitor] (Jane đến bệnh viện thăm Tom.)
  • Mail is delivered to the prison every day. [= the prison building] (Thư từ được chuyển tới nhà tù mỗi ngày.)
  • I went to the church to see the stained glass windows. [= as a visitor] (Tôi đến nhà thờ để xem những ô cửa sổ kính màu.)
  • The school is a mile from here. [= the school building] (Trường học cách đây một dặm.)

Trong tiếng Anh của người Mỹ, the luôn được dùng trước hospital.
Ex:

  • He spent a week in the hospital with food poisoning. (Anh ấy đã phải nằm viện một tuần vì bị ngộ độc thực phẩm.)
  • She goes to the hospital to visit him every day. (Ngày nào cô ấy cũng vào bệnh viện thăm anh ta.)
  1. Không dùng the trước các danh từ bed, home, work, sea, town.
  • bed: in bed, go to bed (to rest or sleep), get out of bed (= get up)

Ex:

    • It's midnight - Why aren't you in bed? (Đã nửa đêm rồi - Sao anh không đi ngủ?)
    • But: I sat down on the bed. (Tôi ngồi trên giường.) [một vật cụ thể]
  • home: at home, go home, come home, leave home

Ex:

    • Will you be at home tomorrow afternoon? (Chiều mai anh có nhà không?)
  • work: at work, go to work, leave work, finish work

Ex:

    • Ann didn't go to work yesterday. (Hôm qua Ann không đi làm.)
  • sea: at sea (= in a boat or ship on the sea), go to sea (as a sailor)

Ex:

    • Keith is a sailor. He spends months at sea. (Keith là thủy thủ. Anh ấy ở trên biển hàng tháng trời.)
    • But: We're renting a house by the sea. (Chúng tôi sẽ thuê một ngôi nhà gần biển.) [một nơi chốn cụ thể]
  • town: in town, go into town, leave town, out of town

Ex:

    • We're going into town this afternoon. (Chiều nay chúng ta sẽ vào thị trấn.)

Mạo từ được dùng khi nói về ngày, tháng,... cụ thể nào đó (được xác định bằng tính từ đứng trước hoặc cụm từ/ mệnh đề theo sau.)
Ex:

  • We met on a wet Monday evening. (Chúng tôi đã gặp nhau vào một chiều mưa thứ Hai.)
  • It was the January after we went to Greece. (Đó là tháng Giêng sau khi chúng tôi đi Hy Lạp.)
  • I worked very hard in the summer that year. (Mùa hè năm đó tôi đã làm việc rất vất vả.)

Khi nói chung về mùa (seasons) ta có thể dùng hoặc không dùng the, nhưng the luôn được dùng trong cụm từ in the fall (US).

  1. The + danh từ số ít (the + singular noun) thường được dùng để nói chung về nhạc khí, hoặc về việc chơi các nhạc khí. Nhưng trong tiếng Anh của người Mỹ, ta có thể dùng hoặc không dùng the.

Ex:

  • Who's that on (the) piano? (Người đang chơi dương cầm là ai vậy?)
  • She studied (the) oboe and (the) saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music. (Cô ấy học kèn ôboa và xắc-xô ở Học Viện Âm Nhạc Hoàng Gia.)
  1. Không dùng mạo từ trước television khi nói về truyền hình như một hình thức giải trí.

Ex:

  • I often watch television after dinner. (Sau bữa tối tôi thường xem truyền hình.)
  • What's on television tonight? (Tối nay truyền hình có chương trình gì vậy?)

Mạo từ được dùng khi television có nghĩa là 'một chiếc máy truyền hình'.
Ex:

  • Can you turn off the television, please? (Làm ơn tắt giùm tivi.)
  1. Mạo từ thường được dùng với radio, cinematheater.

Ex:

  • How often do you go to the cinema? (Bạn có thường đi xem phim không?)
  1. Không dùng the trước tên riêng ở dạng sở hữu cách.

Ex:

  • The car was parked in front of Tim's house. [NOT ... the Tim's house] (Chiếc ô tô đậu trước nhà Tim.)

Nhưng the có thể được dùng trước danh từ sở hữu.
Ex:
