Hình thức so sánh bằng được thành lập bằng cách thêm as vào trước và sau tính từ (adjective) hoặc trạng từ (adverb).
S + V + as + adj/ adv + as + noun/ pronoun/ clause
Ex:
- Jane sings as well as her sister. (Jane hát hay như chị cô ấy vậy.)
- I'm as tall as him. (Tôi cao bằng anh ấy.)
- Is the film as interesting as you expected? (Phim có hay như bạn mong đợi không?)
Trong câu phủ định, so có thể được dùng thay cho as.
Not as/ so + adj/ adv + as
Ex:
- The film isn't as/ so good as the book. (Phim không hay bằng truyện.)
- She doesn't sing as/ so well as me. (Cô ta hát không hay bằng tôi.)
- He's not as/ so friendly as she is. (Anh ta không thân thiện như cô ấy.)
- So sánh bằng nhau hoặc như nhau cũng có thể được diễn đạt bằng cấu trúc the same as.
S + V + the same + (noun) + as + noun/ pronoun
Ex:
- My house is the same height as his. Or: The height of my house is the same as his. [= My house is as high as his.] (Nhà tôi cao bằng nhà anh ấy.)
- Tom is the same age as Mary. Or: Tom's age is the same as Mary's. [= Tom is as old as Mary.] (Tom cùng tuổi với Mary.)
- Anne gets the same salary as me. Or: Anne's salary is the same as mine. [= Anne's salary is as much as mine.] (Lương của Anne bằng lương của tôi.)
- Chúng ta dùng 'the same as' chứ không dùng 'the same like'
Ex:
- Stuart's opinion on this subject was the same as mine. [NOT ...the same like/ with mine] (Về vấn đề này, Stuart và tôi có cùng ý kiến.)
- Less ... than = not as/so... as
Ex:
- This dress is less expensive than that one. (Cái đầm này không đắt bằng cái kia.) [= This dress isn’t as/ so expensive as...]
- The city center was less crowded than usual. (Trung tâm thành phố ít đông hơn thường ngày.) [= The city center wasn’t as crowded as usual.]
Nhưng trong lối nói thân mật not as/ so...as thường được dùng hơn less...than.
- Khi nói gấp bao nhiêu lần, ta có thể dùng half, twice, three times, etc. trước as ... as.
Ex:
- Petrol is twice as expensive as it was a few years ago. (Giá xăng bây giờ đắt gấp đôi giá xăng cách đây vài năm.) [NOT ...twice more expensive than it was...]
- Their house is about three times as big as ours. [Or ...three times bigger than ours] (Nhà họ lớn khoảng gấp ba nhà chúng tôi.)
