Lời đề nghị, lời hứa, lời khuyên, lời mời, v.v. thường được tường thuật bằng các động từ giới thiệu: offer, recommend, promise, advise, encourage, invite, agree, remind, warn, urge,...
S + offered/recommended (+ O) + to-infinitive
Ex:
- They said, 'We'll pay for the meal.' → They offered to pay for the meal. ( _Họ đề nghị trả tiền bữa ăn._) [= They said that they would pay for the meal.]
- John said, 'I'll write for you.' → John promised to write for me. ( _John hứa sẽ viết thư cho tôi._) [= John promised that he would write for me.]
- Tim said, 'You should/ought to take a taxi, Mary.' → Tim advised Mary to take a taxi. ( _Tim khuyên Mary đi taxi._) [= Tim told Mary that she should/ought to take a taxi.]
- 'Please sit down,' she said. → She invited you to sit down. ( _Bà ấy mời anh ngồi._)
- 'Don't forget to order the wine,' said Mrs. Pitt to her husband. → Mrs. Pitt reminded her husband to order the wine. ( _Bà Pitt nhắc chồng gọi rượu._)
- 'Go on, apply for the job,' said Jack. → Jack urged/encouraged me to apply for the job. ( _Jack thúc giục/ khuyên khích tôi nộp đơn xin việc._)
Một số động từ tường thuật được theo sau bởi động từ nguyên mẫu có to (verb + to-infinitive): offer, agree, demand, guarantee, promise, refuse, propose, swear, threaten, volunteer.
Ex:
- 'I'm not going back into the hospital.' → Mom refused to go back into the hospital. ( _Mẹ từ chối quay lại bệnh viện._)
- 'I'll take you to the airport.' → She offered to take me to the airport. ( _Cô ấy đề nghị đưa tôi ra phi trường._) [NOT She offered me to take me to the airport.]
- Một số động từ tường thuật được theo sau bởi tân ngữ + động từ nguyên mẫu có to (verb + object + to-infinitive): advise, ask, beg, command, encourage, expect, forbid, instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, remind, request, urge, warn.
Ex:
- ‘You had better take the job, Frank.’ → She encouraged/ advised Frank to take the job. (Cô ấy khuyến khích/ khuyên Frank nhận công việc đó.) [NOT She encouraged to take the job.]
- ‘Would you like to come with us?’ → They invited me to go with them. (Họ mời tôi đi cùng.)
- Một số động từ tường thuật được theo sau bởi danh động từ (verb + gerund): admit, advise, deny, recommend và suggest.
Ex:
- ‘Shall we go to a cafeteria?’ → Claire suggested going to a cafeteria. (Claire đề nghị đến quán ăn tự phục vụ.) [NOT Claire suggested to go... / Claire suggested us to go...]
- ‘You should read a number of books before the exam.’ → The teacher advised/ recommended reading a number of books before the exam. (Thầy giáo khuyên/ gợi ý nên đọc nhiều sách trước khi thi.) [But: The teacher advised/ recommended the students to read a number of books before the exam.]
- Một số động từ được theo sau bởi giới từ + danh động từ (verb + preposition + gerund): apologize for, insist on, object to, criticize ... for, thank ... for, congratulate ... on, accuse ... of.
Ex:
- ‘I really must have a rest.’ → Emma insisted on having a rest. (Emma đòi nghỉ ngơi.) [NOT Emma insisted to have a rest.]
- ‘You should have complained.’ → Carl criticized me for not complaining. (Carl chỉ trích tôi vì đã không than phiền.)
- Mệnh đề that (that-clause) có thể được dùng sau admit, advise, agree, insist, complain, deny, predict, promise, remind, suggest và warn. Liên từ that có thể lược bỏ.
Ex:
- ‘Why not try the shop on Mill Road?’ → Liz suggested (that) I should try the shop on Mill Road. (Liz gợi ý tôi nên đi thử cửa hiệu trên đường Mill.) [NOT Liz suggested me to try...]
- ‘I’ll finish the work by the end of this week.’ Nick promised (that) he would finish the work by the end of this week. _(Nick hứa là anh ấy sẽ hoàn thành công việc vào cuối tuần này.)_
- ‘Be careful. Nick’s dog is very fierce.’ She warned (that) Nick’s dog is very fierce. _(Cô ấy cảnh báo rằng con chó của Nick rất dữ.)_
- ‘OK, OK. Yeah. I broke that window.’ Trevor admitted (that) he had broken the window. _(Trevor thú nhận anh ấy đã làm vỡ cửa sổ.)_
– Chúng ta thường dùng mệnh đề that (that-clause) với should để thuật lại lời khuyên, lời yêu cầu, lời gợi ý, v.v. về những việc đáng làm hoặc cần được thực hiện.
Ex:
- ‘Why don’t you begin to look for another job, Paul?’ → Jane suggested that Paul should begin to look for another job. _(Jane gợi ý Paul nên tìm một công việc khác.)_
Tuy nhiên, thể giả định (subjunctives) cũng có thể được dùng sau một số động từ như suggest, recommend, ask, insist.
Ex: Jane suggested that Paul begin to look for another job.
– Không dùng mệnh đề that (dùng to-infinitive) sau các động từ intend, long, offer, plan, refuse, volunteer, want.
Ex:
- ‘I’ll drive you to the airport,’ he said to me. → He volunteered to drive me to the airport. _(Anh ấy tình nguyện đưa tôi ra phi trường.)_ [NOT He volunteered that he would drive me...]
– Cấu trúc Can/ Could/ Will/ Would you..., please? hoặc Would/ Do you mind + V-ing...? được xem như câu yêu cầu.
Ex:
- ‘Could you pass me the salt, please?’ → He asked/ told me to pass him the salt. _(Anh ấy bảo tôi chuyển cho anh ấy lọ muối.)_
– Cấu trúc Would you like...? được xem như lời mời.
Ex:
- ‘Would you like to go to the movies?’ → He invited me to go to the movies. _(Anh ấy mời tôi đi xem phim.)_
– Cấu trúc Shall I/ we...? và Can I...? được xem như lời đề nghị.
Ex:
- ‘Shall I carry your bags?’ the porter said. → The porter offered to carry my bags. _(Người khuân vác đề nghị xách túi cho tôi.)_
– Cấu trúc If I were... được xem như lời khuyên.
Ex:
- ‘If I were you, I would stop smoking.’ → She advised me to stop smoking. _(Cô ấy khuyên tôi bỏ thuốc lá.)_
- Cấu trúc Let’s…, Shall we…?, Why not…? hoặc Why don’t…? được xem như lời gợi ý và được tường thuật lại bằng: suggest + verb-ing/ that clause.
Ex:
- The guide said, ‘Let’s stop for a rest.’ → The guide suggested stopping for a rest. (Người hướng dẫn gợi ý dừng lại nghỉ ngơi.)
- The guide suggested that we should stop/ stopped for a rest. (Người hướng dẫn gợi ý chúng ta nên dừng lại để nghỉ ngơi.)
