38.2 Trạng từ quan hệ (Relative adverbs)

Các trạng từ when, where và why có thể được dùng để giới thiệu mệnh đề quan hệ sau các danh từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn và lý do.

1. Where (= in/ at which) được dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ nơi chốn.

Ex:

• • The house where (= in which) Mozart was born is now a museum. (Ngôi nhà Mozart chào đời hiện là viện bảo tàng.)
  • I flew to Munich, where (= at which) I had to catch another plane to Oslo. (Tôi bay tới Munich, tại đó tôi phải bắt một chuyến bay khác tới Oslo.)

1. When (= on/ at/ in which) được dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ thời gian.

Ex:

• • I'll never forget the day when (= on which) I met her. (Tôi sẽ không bao giờ quên cái ngày tôi gặp cô ấy.)
  • The parcel arrived at 11 am, when (= at which) I was still at work. (Bưu kiện đến lúc 11 giờ trưa, lúc đó tôi vẫn còn làm việc.)
  • Spring is the season when (= in which) flowers of all kinds are in full bloom. (Mùa xuân là mùa muôn hoa nở rộ.)

1. Why (= for which) thường được dùng chỉ lý do, thay cho the reason.

Ex:

• • We'd like to know the reason why she didn't accept the job. (Chúng tôi muốn biết lý do tại sao cô ta không nhận việc.)
  • The reason why I didn't call you is that I've lost your phone number. (Lý do tôi không gọi điện cho anh là vì tôi đánh mất số điện thoại của anh.)

• Trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (definite relative clauses), when và why thường được thay bằng that hoặc lược bỏ (trong lối nói thân mật).

Ex:

• • I'll never forget the day when I met her.
  • I'll never forget the day on which I met her.
  • I'll never forget the day that I met her.
  • I'll never forget the day I met her.

• • We'd like to know the reason why she didn't accept the job.
  • We'd like to know the reason for which she didn't accept the job.
  • We'd like to know the reason that she didn't accept the job.
  • We'd like to know the reason she didn't accept the job.

Where chỉ có thể được thay bằng that hoặc được lược bỏ khi where đứng sau các từ somewhere, anywhere, everywhere, nowhere và place (không được bỏ khi where đứng sau các từ khác).
Ex:

• • Is there somewhere where I can lie down for an hour? → (Có chỗ nào cho tôi ngả lưng một tiếng đồng hồ không?)
  • Is there somewhere that I can lie down for an hour?
  • Is there somewhere I can lie down for an hour?

• • We need a place where we can stay for a few days. → (Chúng tôi cần một nơi để ở lại vài ngày.)
  • We need a place that we can stay for a few days.
  • We need a place we can stay for a few days.

But:

• • This is the house where I used to live. → (Đây là ngôi nhà mà tôi sống trước đây.)
  • This is the house in which I used to live.
  • This is the house that I used to live in.
  • This is the house I used to live in.
  • [NOT This is the house I used to live.]

• Không dùng giới từ (prepositions) trong mệnh đề quan hệ bắt đầu bằng các trạng từ quan hệ where, when và why.

Ex:

• • The building where he lives is very old. [NOT The building in where he lives... / The building where he lives in...]
  • I'll never forget the day when I met you. [NOT ...the day on when I met you / ...the day when I met you on]

• Có thể dùng where và when không có danh từ đi trước.

Ex:

• • Put it where we can all see it. [= the place where] → (Hãy đặt nó ở nơi mà tất cả chúng ta đều nhìn thấy.)
  • Remember when we went camping? [= the time when] → (Có nhớ lúc chúng ta đi cắm trại không?)
