Mệnh đề quan hệ có thể được rút gọn bằng cụm phân từ hiện tại hoặc quá khứ (present/ past participle phrases).
a. Hiện tại phân từ (present participle) có thể được dùng khi:
- Động từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ ở thì tiếp diễn.
Ex: Peter, who was concentrating on his work, didn't hear the doorbell.
→ Peter, concentrating on his work, didn't hear the doorbell.
(Peter, đang tập trung học bài, không nghe tiếng chuông cửa.)
Tell the people who are waiting outside to come in.
→ Tell the people waiting outside to come in.
(Hãy bảo những người đang đợi bên ngoài vào trong.)
He ignored the phone that was ringing on his desk.
→ He ignored the phone ringing on his desk.
(Anh ta phớt lờ cái điện thoại đang réo trên bàn làm việc.)
- Động từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ diễn đạt tình trạng hoặc sự việc có tính cố định, thường xuyên hoặc lâu dài.
Ex: We stood on the bridge which connects the two halves of the city.
→ We stood on the bridge connecting the two halves of the city.
(Chúng tôi đang đứng trên chiếc cầu nối hai nửa thành phố.)
The woman who lives next door is a famous novelist.
→ The woman living next door is a famous novelist.
(Người phụ nữ sống kế bên nhà là một tiểu thuyết gia nổi tiếng.)
Teams which have completed the first round go into the quarter-finals.
→ Teams completing the first round go into the quarter-finals.
(Các đội hoàn tất vòng đầu sẽ vào vòng tứ kết.)
People who arrived late were not allowed in until the interval.
→ People arriving late were not allowed in until the interval.
(Những người đến trễ đã không được vào cho đến lúc giải lao.)
- Động từ trong mệnh đề diễn đạt ước muốn, hy vọng, mong đợi, v.v.
Ex: Fans who hope to buy tickets have been queuing all night.
→ Fans hoping to buy tickets have been queuing all night.
(Những người hâm mộ hy vọng mua được vé đã xếp hàng suốt đêm.)
Anyone who wants a ticket for the Final see me.
→ Anyone wanting a ticket for the Final see me.
(Ai cần vé xem trận chung kết thì gặp tôi nhé.)
Bill, who wanted to make an impression on Ann, took her to the Portrait Gallery.
→ Bill, wanting to make an impression on Ann, took her to the Portrait Gallery. (_Muốn gây ấn tượng với Ann, Bill đã đưa cô ấy đến phòng trưng bày ảnh chân dung._)
