Muốn chuyển một câu chủ động sang câu bị động, ta thực hiện các bước sau:
- Lấy tân ngữ (object) của câu chủ động làm chủ ngữ (subject) của câu bị động.
- Đổi động từ chủ động (V_A) thành động từ bị động (V_P).

- Chủ ngữ của câu chủ động thành tác nhân (agent) của câu bị động và trước nó phải có giới từ by.
Ex: Miguel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote.
→ Don Quixote was written by Miguel de Cervantes.
(Don Quixote được viết bởi Miguel de Cervantes.)
Chủ ngữ I, you, he, she, it, we, they, one, people, someone, somebody, nobody, no one trong câu chủ động thường được bỏ. Với nobody, no one và none, đổi động từ sang phủ định.
Ex: Someone plays the piano every night.
→ The piano is played every night.
(Đêm nào cũng có người chơi dương cầm.)
Nobody has watered the garden for weeks.
→ The garden hasn’t been watered for weeks.
(Khu vườn đã không được tưới hàng tuần nay.)
Lưu ý
Dùng with (không dùng by) để chỉ dụng cụ, công cụ hoặc nguyên liệu được tác nhân sử dụng để thực hiện hành động.
Ex: He was shot (by the policeman) with a rifle. [NOT He was shot by a rifle.]
(Anh ta bị (cảnh sát) bắn bằng súng trường.)
Hãy so sánh:
He was killed by a heavy stone. [A stone fell and killed him.]
(Anh ta bị giết bởi một hòn đá to.)
He was killed with a heavy stone. [Somebody used a stone to kill him.]
(Anh ta bị giết bằng một hòn đá to.)
