Where chỉ có thể được thay bằng that hoặc được lược bỏ khi where đứng sau các từ somewhere, anywhere, everywhere, nowhere và place (không được bỏ khi where đứng sau các từ khác).
Ex: Is there somewhere where I can lie down for an hour?
Is there somewhere that I can lie down for an hour?
Is there somewhere I can lie down for an hour?
(Có chỗ nào cho tôi ngả lưng một tiếng đồng hồ không?)
- We need a place where we can stay for a few days.

- Không dùng giới từ (prepositions) trong mệnh đề quan hệ bắt đầu bằng các trạng từ quan hệ where, when và why.
Ex: The building where he lives is very old.
[NOT The building in where he lives... / The building where he lives in...]

[NOT ...the day on when I met you / ...the day when I met you on]
- Có thể dùng where và when không có danh từ đi trước.
Ex: Put it where we can all see it. [= the place where]
(Hãy đặt nó ở nơi mà tất cả chúng ta đều nhìn thấy.)
Remember when we went camping? [= the time when]
(Có nhớ lúc chúng ta đi cắm trại không?)
